The first time ball in Cape Town stood on a wooden tower in mid 19th century in Observatory. With the development of the docks in 1860's that ball was no longer visible to the ships in the harbour. The second one was built in the slopes of Signal Hill, and that was replaced by this one in the V&A Waterfront.
