      Statement of Significance

Benjamin Moodie, his brothers and their descendats have from 1817 contributed to the development of Southern Africa. At his own initiative Moodie brought to the Cape the first large group of settlers from the British Isles, craftsmen whose skills helped to develop the Overberg where they settled. _x000D_

The memorial to Benjamin Moodie serves to inform the public of his great contribution to the development of this country. It is situated on "Moodie Plain", land which was once part of Moodie's farm Westfield and which retains the fynbos of the area.
