      Statement of Significance

This magnificent building was designed in 1900 by the well-known architect Daniel Westwood Greatbatch. It replaced the old Alexandersfontein Hotel building, which was restored in 1881. The building that was completed in October 1902 was enlarged in 1907 by the addition of an extra wing. The hotel, which was closed in 1939, was taken over by the SA Defence Force in 1967 and converted into an officers' club for the Danie Theron Combat Schol, which is located at Alexandersfontein.
