      Statement of Significance

      This unique complex, consisting of a rural Cape Dutch house and semi-detached wine cellar, was erected in 1871 by Francois du Toit. He was married to the daughter of Gideon Johannes Retief, youngest brother of the Voortrekker leader Net Retief. This complex forms an integral part of the architectural character of Long Street, the oldest street in Montagu.
