This old smoke stack, which dates from 1880, was erected by the then Cape Copper Company to provide energy to the nearby pumping engine so as to pump water from the mine shafts. In 1952 it was declared a monument in memory of the pioneer copper miners in Namaqualand.

The historic old Smoke Stack Monument, together with 10 square metres of fenced land around it, situate on certain piece of abolished quitrent land in the Division of Namaqualand, being the remaining extent of the farm called Brakfontein, alias Groot Brak, now known as the farm Brakfontein 133.
