      Statement of Significance

      This unique pump engine, typical of that invented by Thomas Newcome of Cornwall in 1712, was used to pump water from the O'Okiep mine during the period 1882 to 1929. The pump engine was restored in 1965-1968.

      The historic Cornish pump engine complex , consisting of an engine, cornish pump, mine shaft and furnace, situated on certain piece of abolished quitrent land, situate in the Division of Namaqualand, being the remaining extent of the farm called Brakfontein alias Groot Brak, and measuring as per remaining extent: Three thousand two hundred and twelve (3 212) morgen, four hundred and ninety-seven (497) square roods, one hundred and thirty-two (132) square feet.
