      Statement of Significance

The Van der Kemp church in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth, has significance in the memory of Dr van der Kemp and his struggles for the indigenous people of South Africa, at a time when such thoughts were almost considered blasphemy by the powers that be . The church is a fine example of early eighteenth century architecture. The David Livingstone cottage, which is very close to the church, is of the few examples of early eighteenth vernacular architecture in the region and as such is one of the few reminder of the humble circumstances in which even the famous people of the time had to live.
