      Statement of Significance

The first farm in Idas Valley was granted in 1683 to Francois Villon, a French Huguenot. Important historical figures, like J. X. Merriman and Sir Thomas Smartt, also owned farms in the Valley. On several farms, specifically Rustenburg, Schoongezicht, Idas Valley and Glenbawn, there are Cape Dutch houses and wine cellars of considerable architectural importance. The Valley also has a unique rustic character and natural beauty, and is, in its entirety, of exceptional national importance.
