Statement of Significance

HISTORICAL INTEREST. _x000D_
In 1896 the Government of the South African Republic decided to build a fort round the existing prison. The prison was built already in 1892 and enlarged in 1894. The fort was completed in 1899 and handed over to the State Artillery.
