      Statement of Significance

The house was designed by Leck and Emley in the Arts and Crafts tradition for Frederick William Diamond, a stockborker and accountant who had come to Johannesburg just after the discovery of gold. He lived there until his death in 1928 and his widow sold the property to the son of WB Pickles, the founder of the firm of the same name, the well-known men's outfitters. It was bought in 1964 by the Hamlet school for mentally handicapped children, and the name changed to The Hamlet. In 1991 it was sold for office development.
