      Statement of Significance

This unique residence is situated in Rock Ridge Road. Sir Herbert Baker, the well-known architect of the Union Buildings, designed and had the house built for himself. In it he tried to incorporate all the traits which he visualised in the renewal of the South African domestic architecture. Built of stone, it becomes one, as it were, with the rocky koppie on which it stands. Sir Patrick Duncan, Governor-General of the Union of South Africa for many years, was the owner of the house for a considerable time.
