      Statement of Significance

      Twelve fossil sites in the Cradle of Humankind have been declared National Heritage Sites. Some of these have evidence of early fossil hominids including Australopithecines, Paranthropines and early Homo dating back to at least the last three million years. Seven of the sites are curently being studied. Sterkfontein is open to visitors and some of the other sites may be visited by special arrangement.
