The bridge was built under Act No. 698, passed on 16th October, 1895, by the Executive Council. The building contractor was an Italian by the name of Celso Gin. The bridge was named in honour of Isaac Johannes Meyer, who represented Middelburg in the Second ‘Volksraad’. The total cost was R23 620.

Meyer's Bridge is one of the fine stone bridges built by the South African Republic. It was built in 1896.
