      Statement of Significance

      This building was designed by Charles Hosking and completed in 1906 as the first permanent office building for the Roodepoort-Maraisburg Municipality. It served this purpose until 1936. The western wing was designed by the firm Baker & Fleming and added on in 1918.

      The Old Municipal Chambers situated on the following stands:
      (a) Certain Stand 745, situate in Berlandina Street in the Township of Roodepoort, Transvaal, in extent 670,1324 (six hundred and seventy decimal one three two four) square metres.
      Crown Grant G61/17, dated 5 June 1917 (paragraph 1).
      (b) Certain Stand 746, situate in Berlandina and Jan Streets (the latter now known as Hodgson Street) in the Township of Roodepoort, Transvaal, in extent 346,962 (three hundred and forty six decimal nine six two) square metres.
      Crown Grant G617/17, dated 5 June 1917 (paragraph 2).
