In 1856 President Brand warned the Boer farmers to take steps to protect themselves and their livestock from the marauding black tribes.
A monument was erected and together with the Venter graves, the Skanskraal walls with their imposing gun windows, still stand as a grim reminder of that time in history.

The site, inclusive of the skanskraal and Voortrekker grave thereon, situate on a portion of the Remainder of the farm Kromfontein 209, in the Administrative District of Ventersburg, Province of the Orange Free State , being a national monument site, in extent 4 469 (four thousand four hundred and sixly-nine) square metres. which is described as the Figure ABCD on Surveyors Diagram SG 98/ 1987 . dated 31 March 1987, filed in the Office of the Surveyor General in Bloemfontein and on File 4/0/Ven/1 in the Office of the National Monuments Council in Cape Town.
