      Statement of Significance

Here the Battle of Rorke's Drift was fought during the afternoon and night of 22 January 1879. A small British force of two officers and 110 men defended themselves bravely against the repeated attacks of some 4,000 Zulus. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded as a result of the action.
