Inscriptions
Peter Smith,his wife Ann,their son William Craighead and daughters Isabella and Elizabeth,arrived in South Africa in December 1859 from Hole Hill Farm,Dundee,Scotland,his brother Thomas,a bachelor had been here since 1855 and in 1864 the two brothers built and occupied this cottage. Peter and William Smith,Dugald Macphail (Peters son in law) and Charles G. Willson were the founders of Dundee,Natal.The cottage has been restored by descendanta of Peter Smith

The iron roof dates from 1901.
The cottage is built on an outcrop of sandstone and there is no foundations.
The original cottage consisted of the two front rooms.
The kitchen ,pantry and bathroom were added in 1870's.
The main bedroom and drawing room were added after the Anglo-Boer War.
The roll top desk belonged to Peter Smith.
The two upright wooden chairs with leather seats in the entrace room were a wedding present to Dugald Macphail and Isabella Smith from the Duke of Argyll.
The wallpapers and flooring designed were passed on to the museum researchers by elderly people who had known and visited the Smiths in their house so that they could recreate the house as it was before peter and Ann lived in it.
