      Statement of Significance

      This richly ornamented temple was constructed by Pandit Shiskishan Maharaj, a Hindu priest who immigrated to South Africa in 1895. The temple, surrounded by a moat, was dedicated to the war like god Jagannathi.

      History: Built by Hindu priest and sanskrit scholar,Pundit Shiskishan Maharaj, who immigrated to South Africa, in 1895; originally a private temple.
      Description: 23m high Tower (sikhara), single entrance cappedby an octangenal squat shape and a dome: the four images of Vishnu are emphasised, seated aloft, facing the four quaters of the earth.Sitefeat: originally surrounded by a moat now filled in: surrounded by an open space ringed around with mango trees:
      Alterations: eg adition of low redbrick wall and tiled path leading to temple entrance,concreate path round temple.
