Inscriptions
Fort Pearson was built on this knoll overlooking the Thukela River. It was built in January 1879 by marines from the ship HMS Active and named after Colonel Charles Knight Pearson, commander of the right flank column. Its task would be to protect the lower crossing of the Thukela, which would enable supplies and men to be ferried into Zululand and advance via Eshowe to Ulundi. The fort would once more be in use during the second invasion of Zululand, commencing in May 1879. On 11 December 1878 a delegation representing King Cetshwayo met a British delegation under a large Sycamore fig tree on the Southern bank of the Thukela River. An ultimatum threatening War was handed to the Zulu delegation. King Cetshwayo was unable to meet the conditions, in particular that he disband the Zulu military system, the framework which held the nation together. The Zulu nation consisted of a confederacy of clans unified by a military system established by King Shaka.
