Several buildings forming a gaol, house and magistrate's Court. Have corrugated-iron roofs and are of sandstone. Buildings linked by a high, loop holed wall forming a rectangular fort. Sash or barred windows & 4-panel doors. Veranda of simple timber post.Interior: Internal parade ground/exercise area.Alter Desc: Mock stone addition to courthouse. New cells in central quad.SiteFeat: close to street, walled enclosure occupies almost the entire property.History: Built in 1898 as a goal, this structure is typical of police and prison fortifications of the time designed to control the population and act as refuge in time of war. Became a museum when the prison closed in the 1970's.
