Tombstone of Josiah Tshangana (Juju) Gumede. The Life President of the ANC. Josiah Tshangana (Juju) was born on the 9th of October 1864 in Healdtown , fort Beaufort in the Cape Colony, now known as the Eastern Cape. His Father John Tshangana Gumede was the descendant of Khondlo, the father of Phakathwayo, Inkosi YaMaQwabe. He was a farmer and a teacher as well as a political agitator notably against the colour bar in the South African act of 1909 and the Natives Land Act of 1913. JT Gumede was a pioneer Political organizer of Native people having co-founded The Natal Native Congress in 1901 and later The South African National Native Congress (SANNC) , in 1912 which became the African National Congress in 1923. In 1927 he was elected President General of the ANC and is noted for promoting partnerships between the ANC and communist party of South Africa ( CPSA), which did not sit well with some of his contemporaries. In 1930 JT Gumede was outvoted but continued to serve the ANC wholeheartedly. Under the leadership of DR Xuma in 1943, 13 years later, he was made an honorary president General of the ANC. He died on the 6th of November 1946 and was buried 2 days later in Mountain Rise Cemetery in Pietermaritzburg.
