    Object Description

Bulk geological samples consisting of ancient (Pleistocene) sands, silts, and gravels, were collected to measure background environmental radiation in the sediments to help facilitate the dating of OSL samples (see Object EFK-25-OSL samples). Given the nature of fluvial depositional environments, bulk samples for measuring background radiation are necessary to identify the baseline (average) radiation for the study area in order to correctly interpret the OSL results. The samples collected for this purpose are stored in 1-liter ziploc bags and derive from similar depositional contexts as the OSL samples that were collected for this project. The samples derive from two profiles in the Erfkroon study area: Area M and Area N. Sample counts from each area are as follows: Area M=12, Area N=8.

    Provenance

The samples derive from geological exposures at Areas M and N at the site of Erfkroon. The samples were collected from a range of depths (~80-270 cm below modern surface).

These samples will be shipped to Dr. Olav Lian at the Luminescence Dating Laboratory at the University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, for processing. Dr. Lian will be working collaboratively with Ms. Sarah E. Morris, PhD candidate at Simon Fraser University and the National Museum of Bloemfontein. The results from this study will be incorporated into Ms. Morris' PhD dissertation research, and collaborative publications produced with researchers at the National Museum (Dr. Will Archer) and affiliates of Texas State University (Dr. Britt Bousman, Dr. Holly Meier).
    Collector Comment
Samples were collected between June and July 2025 by Sarah Morris, PhD candidate at Simon Fraser Univeristy, and Drs. Britt Bousman and Holly Meier, affiliates of Texas State University.
